Resettlement

Resettlement is considered a durable solution for refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It’s defined as a way to permanently resolve the situation of refugees and allow them to live normal lives. Resettlement is unique among the UNHCR’s three durable solutions because it involves moving refugees from an asylum country to a third country. 

Resettlement can be permanent or limited to a certain number of years. It’s often used to help refugees who are in vulnerable situations and don’t have enough support in their current countries. For example, refugees might be resettled in countries like the US, Canada, or EU member states. 

Governments and non-governmental organizations work together to help resettled refugees integrate into their new communities. These services can include cultural orientation, language, and vocational training, and programs to help refugees access education and employment. After some time, resettled refugees may be granted citizenship and lose their refugee status.
