Why Displacement
Causes
Conflict can cause displacement when people flee their homes to escape violence, economic devastation, and chaos. This can include armed conflict, criminal violence, communal violence, or political violence. People may also flee in anticipation of violence or due to the cumulative effects of war. Displacement can occur within a country or across an international border.
Climate change can also threaten human rights, increase poverty, and strain relations between communities. According to a UN special rapporteur, the effects of climate change are accelerating and could lead to the displacement of around 1.2 billion people over the next 30 years.
Natural disasters can cause displacement when people are forced to leave their homes or communities to avoid the effects of a natural hazard or disaster. This can happen due to sudden-onset events like tsunamis, earthquakes, and floods, or slow-onset processes like desertification and sea level rise.
Outbreaks and epidemics can cause displacement in several ways.
Poverty and lack of opportunity add to the vulnerability of communities when conflicts erupt, climate and natural disasters hit, and epidemics break out. The overlapping and often mutually reinforcing calamities and catastrophes displace people, looking for immediate safety, protection, and opportunities for a secure future.
