Statement from Displaced International on the Introduction of New Bipartisan Legislation to Support Afghan Allies and Renewed U.S. Commitment
Displaced International (DI) warmly welcomes Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), a former Army Ranger and member of the House Armed Services Committee, for introducing new bipartisan legislation that honors America’s solemn promise to our Afghan allies. We commend Congressman Crow, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), and all co-sponsors for their steadfast leadership in advancing protections for the Afghan partners who stood bravely alongside American servicemembers.
This legislation rightly acknowledges the immense sacrifices made by tens of thousands of Afghans who risked their lives in support of U.S. missions and who, following the military withdrawal, were forced to flee for their safety. Recognized as Convention refugees under the 1951 Geneva Convention, these individuals deserve immediate and durable legal protections. The Afghan Adjustment Act establishes a vital, humane pathway to lawful permanent residency, providing the stability necessary for these partners to rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
We also express our deep appreciation to the coalition of veteran and advocacy organizations supporting this effort, including No One Left Behind, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, With Honor Action, and Student Veterans of America. Their collective voice underscores the urgent moral and national security imperative to uphold America’s promises.
Displaced International further welcomes President Donald Trump’s recent commitment to assisting Afghan refugees stranded in the United Arab Emirates since the fall of Kabul in 2021. This long-overdue recognition brings renewed hope to thousands of at-risk Afghans—many of whom served alongside U.S. forces and agencies—who have endured nearly four years in limbo under difficult and uncertain conditions. We urge the Trump Administration, including the Departments of State and Homeland Security, to swiftly operationalize this pledge by facilitating expedited processing and safe resettlement. This is not only a moral obligation but a strategic imperative to uphold America’s credibility and humanitarian leadership.
