Statement by Displaced International Welcoming President Donald Trump’s Commitment to Peace and Conflict Resolution
On behalf of Displaced International (DI), we extend our congratulations to President Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. DI warmly welcomes his firm commitment to ending wars, preventing new conflicts, and leaving a lasting legacy as “a peacemaker and unifier.” This vision aligns closely with DI’s mission to address the root causes of forced displacement and promote global stability.
Ambassador M. Ashraf Haidari, DI Founder & President, remarked: “I can confidently say that resolving protracted conflicts will significantly reduce forced displacement. From my own lived experiences, I know that every displaced individual is a victim of ongoing and emerging conflicts exacerbated by geopolitical tensions. In conditions of peace and economic stability, no one would abandon their cherished homeland to face perilous journeys in search of safety and an uncertain future.”
Conflict remains the leading driver of displacement, compelling millions to flee their homes to escape violence, economic collapse, and chaos. Displacement disrupts lives, separates families, and endangers vulnerable populations. Whether caused by armed conflict, political unrest, or communal violence, these crises are often worsened by violations of international humanitarian law (IHL), which hinder humanitarian aid and leave millions unprotected.
As of June 2024, an estimated 122.6 million people were forcibly displaced globally—a 5% increase from the end of 2023. This includes nearly 43.7 million refugees, with children making up 40% of the displaced population. Between 2018 and 2023, more than 2 million children were born into refugee life, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
Guided by the United Nations Charter, DI prioritizes conflict resolution and peacebuilding to address these challenges and pave the way for displaced populations to rebuild their lives. We recognize that sustainable peace is essential to breaking the cycle of displacement and creating opportunities for stability and growth.
In the coming months, Displaced International looks forward to collaborating with the Trump Administration to advance the President’s vision of fostering global peace. Together, we aim to champion conflict resolution and promote lasting peace in nations affected by war, including Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and others.
