Displaced International Statement on the U.S.-Brokered Azerbaijan–Armenia Peace Agreement: Advancing Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding to End Forced Displacement

Displaced International (DI) warmly welcomes the historic announcement that Azerbaijan and Armenia have signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement at the White House, facilitated under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump. We commend the leaders of both nations for their courage and determination to move beyond decades of conflict toward a shared future of peace, stability, and prosperity. We also recognize the pivotal role of the United States in sustaining high-level diplomatic engagement since March 2025, which was instrumental in achieving this breakthrough.

“For more than 35 years, Azerbaijan and Armenia have endured a bitter conflict that brought tremendous suffering to both peoples. Many efforts were made to find a resolution — without success. With this Accord, we have finally succeeded in making peace,” said President Trump.

“It’s a day that will be remembered by the people of Azerbaijan with pride and gratitude to President Trump. Within several months, he has helped end conflicts in Asia, Africa, and now the South Caucasus — what we could not achieve for more than 30 years. We will turn the page on standoff, confrontation, and bloodshed, and provide a bright and safe future for our children,” said President Ilham Aliyev.

“Today, we have reached a significant milestone in Azerbaijani and Armenian relations. We are laying the foundation to write a better story than the one we had in the past. This breakthrough would not have been possible without President Trump’s personal engagement and his steadfast commitment to peace,” said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Protracted conflict remains the leading cause of forced displacement worldwide, a reality vividly illustrated by the crisis in the South Caucasus. In Azerbaijan, over 650,000 individuals remain internally displaced, while in 2023, renewed hostilities forced more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians to flee to Armenia, compounding an already significant displaced population from previous conflicts. These staggering figures underscore the urgent need to address the root causes of forced displacement — namely, entrenched political and territorial disputes — and to implement sustainable, durable solutions that restore safety, dignity, and lasting stability for affected communities.

This landmark peace agreement presents a genuine opportunity for Azerbaijan and Armenia to collaboratively rebuild trust, promote reconciliation, and foster inclusive development — with the constructive support of the United States as a committed partner in regional stability.
