Displaced International Statement of Gratitude to Tajikistan for Humanitarian Leadership After Eastern Afghanistan Earthquake
Displaced International extends its deepest gratitude to the government and people of the Republic of Tajikistan for their extraordinary humanitarian support to the victims of the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.
On September 8, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan announced the dispatch of more than 3,000 tons of life-saving relief supplies to Afghanistan. According to the President’s office, this assistance includes flour, rice, oil, sugar, blankets, shoes, clothing, and other essential items. President Rahmon emphasized that this initiative is “a clear symbol of the solidarity and compassion of the people of Tajikistan toward the brotherly people of Afghanistan, and a testament to the humanitarian policy and good-neighborly relations of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Leader of the Nation.”
Despite being one of the smallest and least resource-endowed countries in Asia, Tajikistan has once again proven its humanitarian leadership. The scale and urgency of this aid embody the spirit of selfless solidarity at a time when more than 2,200 Afghans have lost their lives, thousands more have been injured, and entire communities have been reduced to rubble. Tajikistan must be emulated globally—not just across Asia—for responding when needed, effectively sharing their own bread with their Afghan neighbors, even while disagreeing ideologically with the Taliban.
We also acknowledge the valuable contributions of other regional partners, including Russia, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, who have extended emergency assistance to Afghanistan. Yet, Tajikistan’s response—measured not in relative wealth but in moral responsibility—sets a powerful example for the wider region and the international community. Unlike other member-states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which recently met in Tianjin, China, Tajikistan has led the way. This leadership should inspire the SCO as a whole to bolster its region-wide disaster response capacity and ensure timely assistance whenever any member-state—or its immediate neighbors—are struck by natural disasters, including the increasingly frequent climate-induced disasters across the SCO region.
