Displaced International Mourns Rohingya Lives Lost at Sea and Urges Action on Root Causes
Displaced International expresses profound sadness at the reported capsizing of a vessel in the Andaman Sea carrying Rohingya refugees and other vulnerable people, with approximately 250 individuals missing and feared dead in the Andaman Sea incident. We stand in solidarity with the families of those lost and with the survivors who continue to endure immense suffering.
This is not an isolated disaster at sea, but part of a sustained pattern driven by structural neglect. More than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees remain in Bangladesh under deteriorating conditions, with no credible pathway to safety, dignity, or return. In 2023 alone, at least 569 Rohingya were reported dead or missing at sea, and in recent years, thousands have perished along these routes—making them among the deadliest corridors of forced migration.
“This is not a maritime accident—it is a failure of policy and protection,” said Displaced International President and Founder Ambassador Ashraf Haidari. “The international community must confront the structural drivers of forced displacement—statelessness, exclusionary governance, protracted conflict, and the erosion of human dignity—with sustained political resolve. Protecting the Rohingya and others fleeing persecution requires more than temporary relief; it requires enforceable commitments, meaningful accountability, and the expansion of safe, lawful pathways so people are not forced into the hands of smugglers or onto deadly routes. Until these root causes are addressed, such tragedies will remain inevitable.”
Displaced International calls for urgent, coordinated action: robust search and rescue operations; sustained, predictable support for host countries; and a decisive shift toward durable solutions that restore rights, ensure protection, and enable safe, voluntary, and dignified futures. Without such action, the continued loss of life—documented across the region in the Missing Migrants Project—will remain the clearest measure of global inaction.
