Displaced International Expresses Deep Concern Over Escalating Violence in South Sudan
Displaced International (DI) is gravely concerned by the recent surge in hostilities and violence across South Sudan, developments that pose severe threats to civilian safety and undermine ongoing peace efforts.
The arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar has intensified political tensions, raising fears of a return to civil war. This action has drawn criticism from international bodies, including the United Nations, which warn of the potential unraveling of the peace process and increased risk to millions of lives.
Recent reports from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) highlight a significant increase in violence affecting civilians. Between April and June 2024, UNMISS documented 317 incidents impacting at least 1,062 civilians, including 442 fatalities. Of particular concern is the alarming rise in abductions and conflict-related sexual violence during this period.
The humanitarian crisis is further exacerbated by communal violence, which continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians nationwide. UNMISS’s latest quarterly brief reveals that between July and September 2024, 206 incidents affected 792 civilians, resulting in 299 deaths and 310 injuries. The steep increase in abductions and sexual violence during this timeframe is particularly alarming.
DI echoes the concerns of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who has urged regional and international leaders to prevent South Sudan from descending into a new civil war. The Secretary-General emphasized the need for political leaders to prioritize the nation’s interests and called for the immediate release of detained individuals.
In light of these developments, Displaced International calls upon all parties involved to:
- Cease Hostilities Immediately: All armed groups and political factions must halt violent activities to prevent further loss of life and displacement.
- Engage in Constructive Dialogue: Leaders should commit to inclusive negotiations aimed at resolving political disputes and revitalizing the peace process.
- Protect Civilians: It is imperative to safeguard civilians, especially women and children, from violence, abduction, and sexual exploitation.
- Ensure Accountability: Perpetrators of human rights violations must be held accountable through transparent and fair judicial processes.
