A Timeless Lesson in Citizenship and Heroism: Ahmed al Ahmed’s Courage Rebukes the Profiling of Immigrants
Displaced International condemns in the strongest terms the antisemitic terrorist attack that struck a Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and we stand in solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community and all Australians.
In the midst of horror, one act of conscience illuminated the best of civic courage. Ahmed al Ahmed—a Syrian-born Australian citizen, a displaced father of two, and a small business owner—moved toward danger as others fled. He disarmed one of the attackers, secured the weapon, and then stepped back to allow police to take control, even as he was shot and seriously wounded.
As DI President and Founder Ambassador Ashraf Haidari stated: “Ahmed al Ahmed offers the world multiple lessons in exemplary citizenship at once. He risked his life to save innocent fellow citizens regardless of their origins. Under mortal threat, he showed restraint rather than vengeance. He upheld the rule of law by securing the weapon and yielding to authorities. And he paid for this courage in blood. His heroism must be registered in our historical memory as a decisive rebuttal to profiling: immigrants and displaced people are ordinary civilians—often extraordinary neighbors—whose lives are upended by conflicts beyond their control. They must never be demonized, stigmatized, or scapegoated when individual crimes occur.”
Ahmed’s story reflects what displaced families contribute when given safety and a fair chance: hard work, belonging, and, when it matters most, a willingness to protect others. His actions also refute anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim narratives, reminding us that citizenship is measured by choices—courage, restraint, and solidarity—not by birthplace.
Displaced International urges leaders, media, and online platforms to reject collective blame and prevent retaliatory hate. Terrorism is the enemy; antisemitism is the poison; and profiling immigrants only deepens division—the outcome extremists seek. We wish Ahmed a full recovery and stand with his family and community as they heal.
